A Melbourne father’s deeply personal story is drawing attention to the growing interest in recovery-focused health practices, after an unexpected pregnancy changed the course of his family’s life.
Mick Owar, who runs recovery facility Primal Recovery, says curiosity about emerging wellness tools coincided with one of the most emotional moments he has experienced.
A personal journey shaped by health curiosity
For years, Owar’s partner believed having children was unlikely. Previous relationships had come and gone without pregnancy, leading her to accept that motherhood might not be part of her future.
By the time the couple met, starting a family was not something they were actively planning or expecting.
At the same time, Owar had become increasingly interested in biohacking and recovery-based health approaches.
Through his work, he began exploring practices aimed at improving circulation, supporting cellular function and aiding physical recovery.
One therapy that recurred in research and conversations was red light therapy.
The couple began using it as part of a broader shift towards healthier living.
They focused on improving diet, lowering stress levels and building consistent wellness habits. Out of curiosity, they also incorporated regular sessions targeting the abdominal area.
An unexpected life moment
Within weeks, their lives took an unexpected turn when Owar’s partner discovered she was pregnant.
He recalls the moment she walked into his office, visibly overwhelmed before sharing the news, describing how time seemed to stand still.
Today, the couple are raising a healthy baby boy who is nearly six months old.
Owar says the experience reinforced his belief that lifestyle choices and recovery practices can play a powerful role in shaping long-term wellbeing.
He acknowledges that building a business focused on health recovery has not always been financially easy, but describes the work as deeply meaningful.
Growing interest in recovery therapies
Interest in treatments such as red light therapy, cold exposure and sauna has increased in recent years as Australians look for ways to manage stress, improve resilience and support overall wellbeing.
Owar believes many of these approaches involve controlled physical stress that helps the body adapt and become stronger over time.
He encourages people exploring wellness routines to understand that meaningful health changes often require consistency and commitment.
While his family’s experience ultimately reflects timing and unexpected outcomes, it also highlights a broader shift towards preventative health strategies.
Personal stories like Owar’s are increasingly shaping conversations around modern wellbeing, lifestyle choices and the evolving paths to starting a family.
