Rebecca Castano-Mander says her journey into cosmetic formulation began after her newborn son suffered serious burns

A frightening accident during a routine baby bath has led one Australian mother to launch an organic personal care range shaped by lived experience, formal study and a determination to challenge everyday ingredients.

Rebecca Castano-Mander says her journey into healthy cosmetic formulation began after her newborn son suffered serious burns from a commercially available baby wash, setting in motion years of research, education and product development.

A traumatic start to motherhood

“My son was around six weeks old. As a first-time mum, I was finding my feet. I used a popular baby bath wash still in production today, and as a result, he suffered second-degree burns," she said.

The incident left a lasting emotional impact. “I was devastated and in shock. I felt guilty and ill.”

In the aftermath, Castano-Mander says she felt compelled to act rather than retreat.

“It occurred to me that if a machine could create something so dangerous, my two hands had a shot at creating something safe, effective and trusting.

"So I did. That was the beginning of the Little Humans Collection, and the product development continued from there.”

A second health scare deepens resolve

Years later, another family crisis intensified her focus on chemicals in everyday products. Her daughter was born with a serious heart condition, prompting the family to reconsider household routines, diet and personal care choices.

“It created a literal life or death awareness for us,” she said.

“This information instantly led me to researching respiratory issues with lung difficulties, and the ‘rabbit hole’ discovered so many ingredients that directly lead to respiratory difficulties and heart complications.”

Her research uncovered what she describes as unsettling realities. “Terrifyingly enough, chemicals are used every day in everyday life and food products. Even including apple juice.”

Turning fear into formal education

Seeking greater understanding and credibility, Castano-Mander pursued formal qualifications in cosmetic science and chemistry.

“I commenced with a degree in cosmetic formulation, then I became more intrigued and, for safety and compliance, decided to undertake an advanced diploma in organic chemistry.”

Her studies later expanded into the field of pharmaceuticals. “Recently, I completed an advanced diploma in drug production.

Not necessarily to produce medications but certainly to be educated on how medications are produced and the safety standards.”

Juggling business and family life

Building a brand while raising young children has presented ongoing challenges, particularly in balancing work and parenting.

“Time management is by far the hardest challenge I still haven’t quite mastered,” she said. “My kids will often want to tell me something exciting or want to show me something, and more often than not simply want a hug.”

The realities of running a laboratory alongside school schedules and family commitments demand constant organisation.

“Practically, trying to run a lab, have a business, manage school pick-ups, drop-offs, extracurricular appointments, and even play dates is almost like micro-managing life to the minute.”

Empowering parents to question ingredients

Castano-Mander believes her experiences highlight the importance of trusting parental instincts and seeking information.

“That gut feeling you get, follow it, ask all the questions, challenge information you’re given.”

Her advocacy has extended into medical consultations.

“When my daughters' lung specialist insisted I try using a commercial brand of sunscreen and I questioned why they would suggest a product with proven cardiac disruptors in it, they had no idea.”

She hopes other parents feel confident making their own choices. “Always remember, your child, your choice.”

Today, she continues to develop organic personal care products for families seeking alternatives to conventional formulations, with a mission shaped by early trauma yet driven by purpose and persistence.
