VetChat founder Dr Claire Jenkins has shared her expert advice for National Cat Health Month, saying a few simple changes could transform your pet’s wellbeing.

Breeder’s Choice has teamed up with Dr Claire Jenkins, CEO and founder of VetChat and the brand’s ambassador, to share five vet-approved tips every cat owner should know.

“Caring for your cat doesn’t have to be complicated,” says Dr Jenkins. “With just a few simple changes, you can make a huge difference in their overall health and quality of life.

1. Don’t Skip the Vet

Many owners miss routine visits. “Adult cats should visit the vet at least once a year, while senior cats need check-ups every six months,” she says.

These check-ups should include a complete physical exam, a dental assessment, and bloodwork if needed, especially as cats often hide pain or illness.

2. Feed for Long-Term Health

“High-quality, balanced cat food certified by reputable organisations like AAFCO or FEDIAF is essential,” says Dr Jenkins.

She also notes that treats can play a role, pointing to Breeder’s Choice Treats as a good example of health-conscious snacking. And don’t forget hydration: clean, fresh water should always be available.

3. Playtime Is Serious Business

Bored cats can become stressed or overweight, especially if they’re indoors. Dr Jenkins recommends enrichment tools like puzzle feeders, climbing structures, and interactive toys.

“Daily play sessions with feather wands or laser pointers can also help maintain physical fitness,” she says. If you can, try installing a catio or window perch so your cat can safely enjoy the outdoors.

4. Watch for Subtle Signs

Cats are experts at hiding illness, so it's up to owners to spot behavioural changes.

“It’s important to pay close attention to changes in behaviour, appetite, or litter box habits,” says Dr Jenkins.

“Symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, or unusual lumps should prompt an immediate vet visit.”

5. Choose Planet-Friendly Products

Pet care can be eco-conscious too. “Breeder’s Choice Litter is lightweight, absorbent, and sustainable, making it a practical choice for conscientious pet owners,” says Dr Jenkins.

Made from recycled paper, it’s free from harsh chemicals and better for the planet.
