Choosing what to wear to a wedding has never been more complicated

Wedding dress codes are becoming more confusing, but a fashion expert says one simple rule can take the stress out of choosing the perfect guest outfit.

From "garden cocktail" to "formal with a twist", modern dress codes are leaving many guests second-guessing their outfit choices, while social media is piling on even more pressure.

New research suggests almost one in three wedding guests struggle to interpret today's increasingly detailed dress codes, with many feeling overwhelmed by the endless stream of wedding inspiration online.

Wedding guest fashion starts with one simple rule

According to Monsoon Creative Director Caroline Jackson, the key to getting wedding guest dressing right is remembering why you're there.

"As a guest, your job is to blend in. You're there to complement the occasion, not compete with it," she said.

Jackson believes social media has made dressing for weddings harder rather than easier, exposing guests to countless interpretations of occasion wear and creating unnecessary pressure to stand out.

Instead, she recommends choosing an outfit that feels elegant, comfortable and versatile enough to be worn again.

Fashion mistakes can be easy to avoid

One of the most common errors is choosing shoes without considering the venue.

Stilettos may look glamorous, but they can quickly become impractical on lawns or uneven ground, making wedges, sandals or flats a smarter choice for outdoor ceremonies.

Jackson also advises guests to pay attention to colour, noting that very pale shades such as soft yellow, blush pink or powder blue can sometimes appear almost white in photographs.

Another simple tip is to look at a venue's social media pages before the event to get a better sense of how previous guests have dressed.

Ultimately, Jackson says the best wedding guest outfits strike a balance between stylish and understated.

Rather than buying a dress you'll only wear once, she recommends investing in timeless pieces that can be styled differently for future occasions, making wedding guest fashion both more sustainable and less stressful.
