A remarkable photograph of a beloved pet named Mr Darcy has propelled Australian pet photographer Kerry Martin of Puppy Tales into the global spotlight.

Kerry has been crowned the only Australian winner at the prestigious International Pet Photography Awards (IPPA), the world’s largest pet photography competition.

The award-winning image, which captures the heartwarming bond between Mr Darcy and his owner, Amelia, won the Pets and People category.

This marks just one of the 18 accolades Kerry received across all four entry categories, earning her the esteemed International Associate of Pet Photographers (IAPP) recognition given to only 18 photographers worldwide in 2023.

“This achievement is incredibly special, and I owe it to the amazing dogs and their wonderful paw-rents I get to photograph,” said Kerry.

“Mr Darcy is one of those extraordinary dogs, offering unconditional love and support to his owner, Amelia, who is a teacher.”

Kerry’s connection with Amelia and Mr. Darcy began when they were finalists in the Puppy Tales Australian Dog of the Year 2023.

.“It’s a privilege to be part of such a talented global community of dog photographers. These awards are a chance to challenge myself and grow," she said.

A New Project to Celebrate Australia’s Dogs

Following her international success, Kerry is embarking on an ambitious new project: Dog Tales of Australia 2: Pawtraits. This stunning coffee table book will showcase the unique bond between Australians and their dogs, set against the breathtaking backdrops of the nation’s diverse landscapes.

Kerry, along with her husband Sam and their dogs Keiko and Summer, is set to travel across every State and nearly every region of Australia over the next two years.

The project offers dog lovers the chance to have their pets featured in the book while supporting a good cause—$100 from every session will be donated to Assistance Dogs Australia, a charity that provides fully trained Assistance Dogs to those in need.

“We’re thrilled to hit the road again,” said Kerry. “This project is about more than photography; it’s about celebrating the incredible connection we have with our pets while giving back to a cause close to my heart.”

Participation starts at just $100, but spots are limited—only one session per town and four per city (in different locations). Dog lovers are encouraged to act fast to secure their spot in this remarkable endeavour

A Journey Worth Wagging About

This isn’t Kerry’s first grand adventure. Her previous project, Dog Tales of Australia, saw her travel 56,400km around the country, culminating in a guidebook of dog-friendly destinations and raising funds to sponsor a Defence Community Dog.

With Pawtraits, Kerry aims to go even further, creating artwork that celebrates the joy and companionship pets bring to our lives. “Your pets are family,” said Kerry.

“They share adventures, offer comfort, and stand by your side. My goal is to capture that bond so you can treasure it forever.”
