Skipping SPF, burning the candle at both ends and leaning a little too hard into weekend drinks may be ageing your skin faster than you think, and a new interactive tool is putting a number on it.
A new Skin Age Calculator from Contour Clinics estimates your “true” skin age by analysing everyday lifestyle factors including sun exposure, diet, exercise, alcohol intake, sleep and skincare routines.
Built using dermatological research, the tool aims to show how seemingly small habits can quietly add years to your skin.
Users can input their daily behaviours to see how their lifestyle stacks up against their actual age, offering a confronting snapshot of how modern living shows up on the face.
When ageing really starts to show
According to Contour Clinics founder and medical doctor Dr Josh Wall, most people misunderstand when visible ageing actually begins.
“Many people think wrinkles are the first sign of ageing, but that’s actually a myth. In most cases, the earliest visible change is a loss of skin radiance and uneven tone in the late 20s to early 30s," he says.
"This happens as collagen production declines and cell turnover slows. Fine lines usually follow, but dullness and pigmentation are often the first giveaways.”
The biggest culprit behind older-looking skin
While genetics and lifestyle both play a role, Dr Wall says one factor stands above all others.
“Sun exposure is the single biggest contributor to visible skin ageing. UV rays penetrate the skin and damage collagen and elastin fibres, leading to wrinkles, sagging, and pigmentation.
"While genetics and lifestyle play a role, protecting your skin from UV is by far the most effective way to slow ageing.”
It is a reminder that daily sunscreen is less about beach days and more about long-term skin health.
Can skin ageing actually be reversed?
The calculator also taps into a common hope and a common myth.
“A common misconception is that drinking collagen supplements or applying collagen creams will ‘reverse’ skin ageing.
"In reality, most collagen molecules are too large to penetrate the skin, and oral supplements may only have modest benefits.
"What truly works are treatments that stimulate your own collagen production, like retinoids, chemical peels, or energy-based devices.
"\Combined with sunscreen and antioxidants, these can improve the look of ageing skin.”

Habits that slow the clock
The data behind the calculator reinforces that prevention still beats correction.
“Daily sunscreen use is the most powerful habit you can adopt. A diet rich in antioxidants, regular exercise, quality sleep, and stress management also supports healthier skin.
Adding evidence-based skincare ingredients like retinoids and vitamin C can further protect and repair skin as you age.”
Keeping it simple pays off
Despite the science, Dr Wall says an effective routine does not need to be complicated.
“An effective routine doesn’t need to be complicated. In the morning, use a gentle cleanser, an antioxidant serum such as vitamin C, and broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher.
At night, focus on repair with a retinoid and a nourishing moisturiser. Consistency is key; these steps build resilience and maintain healthier, younger-looking skin over time.”
For those curious or quietly suspicious of what their lifestyle might be doing beneath the surface, the calculator offers a blunt but useful reality check. Your skin, it turns out, has been keeping score all along.
