Australian veterinarian Dr Claire Jenkins is urging cat owners to rethink their approach to feline care, revealing that small, everyday changes can make a big difference to a cat’s long-term health and happiness.

Dr Jenkins, the founder and CEO of VetChat and an ambassador for Breeder’s Choice, shared the top five tips that veterinarians want every cat owner to know, covering everything from nutrition and mental health to eco-conscious care products.

“Caring for your cat doesn’t have to be complicated,” says Dr Jenkins. “With just a few simple changes, you can make a huge difference in their overall health and quality of life."

Here are your top five tips.

1. Don’t Skip Vet Visits

Dr Jenkins advises that adult cats should be seen by a vet at least once a year, while senior cats need check-ups every six months.

“These visits are crucial for catching potential health issues early and should include a physical exam, dental assessment, and bloodwork if necessary,” she says.

2. Feed a Proper Diet

A balanced, high-quality diet is essential for feline well-being. Dr Jenkins recommends food certified by organisations such as AAFCO or FEDIAF.

“Treats also play a role, and Breeder’s Choice Treats are a fantastic option for rewarding your cat without compromising their health,” she adds. Hydration is just as important, and fresh water should be available at all times.

3. Keep Their Minds and Bodies Active

Mental and physical stimulation are vital, especially for indoor cats. Dr Jenkins suggests puzzle feeders, climbing structures, and interactive toys.

“Daily play sessions with feather wands or laser pointers can also help maintain physical fitness,” she says. “If possible, consider safe outdoor spaces like catios or window perches.”

4. Watch for Subtle Symptoms

Cats tend to hide signs of illness, which means owners must be observant.

“Changes in behaviour, appetite, or litter box habits could be a sign something’s wrong,” warns Dr Jenkins.

She urges immediate veterinary attention if symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, lethargy, or unusual lumps appear.

5. Choose Eco-Friendly Products

Sustainable pet care products are gaining traction, and Dr Jenkins says they can benefit both cats and the environment.

“Breeder’s Choice Litter is lightweight, absorbent, and sustainable, making it a practical choice for conscientious pet owners,” she says. The litter is made from recycled paper and is part of a growing movement toward greener pet care.

As pet owners reflect on their animals’ wellbeing this month, Dr Jenkins encourages a positive, proactive approach. “These five tips aren’t just about maintaining your cat’s health—they’re about strengthening the bond you share and ensuring they live a happy, fulfilling life.”
