With more Australians lacing up their runners, a new study has revealed which races across the country are best suited to those just starting out.

From community events to city-wide favourites, the research by Net World Sports analysed 75 of Australia’s most prominent races, ranking them on everything from course difficulty to accessibility and overall runner experience.

At the top of the list is the Blacktown Mayoral Fun Run in New South Wales, followed closely by Sutherland 2 Surf and the Chevron City to Surf in Perth.

Why these fun runs for beginners stand out

Topping the rankings with a score of 64.8 out of 100, the Blacktown Mayoral Fun Run stands out for one simple reason: it removes the pressure.

With a $10 entry fee and a generous 5.8-hour cut-off time, it gives first-time runners the freedom to take things at their own pace without the fear of being rushed or left behind.

Sutherland 2 Surf, which tied for first place, scores highly for its simplicity. The course features just five sharp turns, making it easy to follow, while its start line sits just metres from public transport, cutting down the usual race-day stress.

In third place, the Chevron City to Surf in Perth offers a more supported experience, with five aid stations along the route to help runners stay hydrated and comfortable.

What makes fun runs for beginners actually beginner-friendly

It is not just about distance. The study found that the best fun runs for beginners share a few key traits: straightforward courses, manageable conditions and strong on-the-ground support.

Events like Run2Cure Melbourne and Bridge to Brisbane also made the top five, offering a balance between challenge and accessibility.

Even environmental factors play a role. The Burnie Ten in Tasmania, for example, recorded the coolest average race-day temperature at just over 11 degrees, making it a more forgiving option for those easing into longer distances.

The appeal of fun runs for beginners is growing

The rise of fun runs for beginners reflects a broader shift in how Australians approach fitness.

A new study reveals the best fun runs for beginners in Australia, highlighting accessible races with easy courses, strong support and stress-free race-day experiences, community, and actually enjoying the experience.

Anwen Davies, a certified personal trainer, says preparation still matters, but mindset is just as important.

“Running a long-distance race is as much about preparation as it is about endurance,” she said.

“The goal is not just to finish the race, but to enjoy the experience, prevent injury, and feel strong every step of the way.”

It is a simple idea, but an important one. The best races are not always the biggest or the fastest. Sometimes, they are the ones that make you want to sign up again.
