AFTER A HEART ATTACK AT JUST 39, I EMBRACED MY SECOND CHANCE OF LIFE
Adam Guthrie had a heart attack at just 39. Six years later he was competing in ironman events after transforming his life. Here, he tells Lifestyle News how he embraced his second chance of life .... and how you can too.
I was the proud owner of a thriving business, pouring my heart and soul into it. But still, I knew, deep down, something was missing in my life.
It felt as though my ladder was leaning against the wrong wall, and I yearned for a life that truly resonated with my soul. My relentless work schedule left me drained, exhausted and on the verge of burnout.
Neglecting my well-being, I became overweight and the strain took its toll on my relationships with my wife and children. A cloud of sadness and depression loomed over my spirit.
Then, one day while I was out surfing, everything changed. The waves were enormous, and I knew I shouldn't be out there as I was both unfit and overweight.
As I paddled over a wave, a sharp pain pierced my chest, radiating into my shoulder and down my left arm.
Initially, I brushed it off as a pulled muscle from my vigorous paddling. However, the pain persisted, and when I returned home, I was struck by a crushing sensation in my chest, accompanied by nausea and dizziness.
I rushed to the hospital. Medical professionals hooked me up to monitors, drawing blood for tests. A short while later, they returned with the news: "Adam, you've had a heart attack." I was only 39 years of age.
I learned only 40% of people survive such an ordeal, I realised I was one of the fortunate ones. It prompted me to question my life, contemplating the unimaginable alternative: what if I hadn't made it? Was I content with the way I had lived my life? Had I pursued my own dreams and desires, unburdened by the expectations of others and society at large?
The answers that surfaced were disheartening. I despised what I discovered. I had been leading a life that wasn't my own, forfeiting my happiness along the way. I felt imprisoned, trapped in a cycle of unhappiness, poor health and unrelenting stress. Life had lost its sparkle, leaving me despondent.
However, within this moment of reckoning, a glimmer of hope emerged — I had been granted a second chance at life.
In that profound realisation, I understood that I was meant to be here, alive and breathing. A surge of gratitude overwhelmed me, but it was accompanied by an acute awareness of the ticking clock.
This newfound lease on life beckoned me to reflect upon what truly mattered to me and how I intended to live moving forward. I vowed to cast aside mediocrity and refuse to settle for a life devoid of balance. No longer would I neglect my health, nor sacrifice my family on the altar of work and ambition.
This second chance became my catalyst for profound transformation. It encouraged me to pursue the life I had always envisioned, to turn my dreams into reality.
I made the courageous decision to sell my business, embracing a change of scenery by relocating to Bali. There, I enrolled my children in Green School, fostering their growth and education in a nurturing environment.
Determined to reclaim my well-being, I shed my excess weight, liberating me from medications. I became fit again, which propelled me to conquer one of the world's most gruelling endurance events—an ironman triathlon encompassing a 3.8km swim, a 180km bike ride, and a 42km marathon run.
A new chapter unfolded as I ventured into a new business which aligned with my passion, one that empowered me to assist others in transforming their lives and health.
With the freedom to work from anywhere in the world, I found my dream life. It’s been 13 years, and my family and I are living in Byron Bay, a beautiful place that brings us joy every day. I have maintained my good health, and my relationship with my wife, children, and even grandchildren is amazing.
You don't have to wait for a major life event to have a second chance. Every moment, every breathe we take is a new beginning and a new opportunity to change our lives for the better.
If an ordinary person like me can completely transform their health and life, I am absolutely certain that anyone can do it too. Just imagine how incredible your life could be if you were given a second chance. How would you choose to live it?
