GROW OR MOW? THE GRASS-ROOTS MOVEMENT BRINGING MEN TOGETHER ONE LAWN AT A TIME

Mowing the lawn is actually great for your mental health

Finally, a Movember challenge that doesn’t require growing patchy facial hair, just a decent patch of lawn.

Scotts Lawn Builder has teamed up with Movember to launch the ‘Grow or Mow?’ challenge, a fresh take on men’s mental health awareness that asks Aussies to grow lush lawns instead of moustaches, all leading up to the national “Big Mow” on November 30.

It’s simple, wholesome and a little bit genius: nurture your lawn, promote yourself. The idea is to get men outdoors, away from screens, and reconnect with neighbours over the fence or at the mailbox, because sometimes the best therapy starts with a chat about fertiliser.

The campaign couldn’t come at a more critical time. Men in Australia are three times more likely to die by suicide than women, and many still face stigma or silence when it comes to seeking help.

‘Grow or Mow?’ aims to break that silence in the most Aussie way possible, with a hose, mower and a sense of humour.

“At Movember, we’re committed to building a future where Australian men can live healthier, happier lives, free from stigma, with the right support at hand,” says Tom Mulvaney, psychologist and Director of Men’s Health at Movember.

“That’s why we’re proud to team up with Scotts on the ‘Grow or Mow?’ challenge. It’s a great way to combine the benefits of getting outside and Priming Season, the preparation time for growing iconic Aussie Mo’s and lush lawns, all while shining a spotlight on men’s mental health.”

Movember’s research shows that more than half of Australian men (55%) aren’t getting enough exercise, so this campaign taps into something simple but powerful: movement, sunlight and connection.

Whether it’s mowing the backyard or just standing barefoot on freshly cut grass, it’s about grounding literally and mentally.

Kerry Sephton, Marketing Director at Scotts Australia, says the partnership was an easy fit. “We’re proud to partner with Movember to drive genuine support and awareness for men’s mental health,” she says.

“In today’s digitally driven world, taking time to step outside, connect with nature, and focus on wellbeing has never been more critical.

Through this partnership, we’re encouraging people to get outdoors, prime their lawns with Scotts Lawn Builder, and at the same time, contribute to the health and well-being of Aussie men.”

And of course, no Scott campaign would be complete without a bit of lawn science.

Their Lawn Builder formula, packed with slow-release nutrients, keeps grass thriving for up to three months and helps it grow out, not up, meaning fewer weeds, fewer trims, and more weekends to enjoy the view.

So, how do you get involved? Head to Bunnings, grab a pack of Scotts Lawn Builder Lawn Food Granular (each purchase supports Movember), give your lawn some love through spring, then join the nationwide “Big Mow” on November 30. Whether you grow or mow, you’re helping raise awareness and funds for men’s mental health, one backyard at a time.

Because this November, the grass really is greener where you care for it.
