WISH UPON A STAR: FIVE NSW ESCAPES WHERE THE NIGHT SKY TAKES CENTRE STAGE
The night sky is becoming a reason to travel in its own right.
As city light pollution, busy schedules, and too much screen time make truly dark skies harder to experience, more Australians are seeking places where they can slow down, step outside, and actually see the stars.
Astrophotographers call the period between mid-autumn and mid-spring ‘Milky Way season’, when conditions in the southern hemisphere are particularly good for seeing and photographing our galaxy.
It’s also a great time to experience the night sky before daylight saving returns in the warmer months, when longer nights give you more time to take it all in.
Nick Baker, CEO of Wilderluxe by Reflections, says travellers are increasingly looking beyond the traditional holiday checklist for experiences that encourage them to slow down.
“The night sky doesn’t require an itinerary – you can simply sit outside, look up and enjoy where you are,” he says.
“For families, it’s a chance to put the screens away, spend quality time together and appreciate the simple experience of being under the stars.”
For those looking to turn a weekend away into something a little more memorable, these five NSW escapes offer plenty of opportunities to experience the night sky.
Wilderluxe Lake Keepit Night Sky
Set in NSW’s Big Sky Country, Wilderluxe at Lake Keepit makes the night sky part of the experience.
The premium safari-style tents feature stargazing skylights, private decks and outdoor baths, giving guests plenty of excuses to spend the evening outside.
Once the sun goes down, the combination of open skies and a setting well away from the bright lights of the city makes it an appealing option for anyone wanting to combine a little luxury with some serious downtime.
There’s also an opportunity to learn more about the night sky and its cultural significance through Big Sky Dreaming in the Gilay Lounge. The immersive film, narrated by Kamilaroi storyteller Uncle Len Waters, brings together ancient stories and Western astronomy.
Blue Mountains
For Sydneysiders, the Blue Mountains are one of the easiest ways to escape the city without travelling too far.
Spend the day walking through the bush, exploring the mountain towns or stopping at one of the region’s many lookouts before staying on after dark.
As the city glow fades, the mountains provide plenty of opportunities to find a quieter spot and watch the stars emerge.
It’s also the sort of destination where you don’t need to make stargazing the entire focus of the trip. The days are filled with walks, food and scenery, with the night sky providing a spectacular finale.
Warrumbungle National Park
For a more serious stargazing escape, Warrumbungle National Park is hard to beat.
Australia’s first Dark Sky Park, it is recognised for the quality of its night skies and is one of the country’s standout destinations for astronomy.
The park’s remote location and limited light pollution make it an especially impressive place to see the Milky Way stretching across the sky.
It’s a destination worth planning around if stargazing is the main reason for the trip, rather than simply something to do once the sun goes down.
Reflections Seal Rocks
For a coastal take on stargazing, Seal Rocks offers something quite different.
Spend the day on the beach, exploring the surrounding bushland or visiting Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse before settling in for an evening under the stars.
Away from the bright lights of Sydney and the larger coastal towns, the area offers a peaceful setting for watching the sky.
With glamping tents and cabins available, it also makes an easy option for a weekend escape where the beach and the stars can share top billing.
Mudgee
Mudgee offers a more relaxed country escape, with plenty to do during the day and wide-open skies after dark.
Spend the daylight hours exploring the region’s wineries, restaurants and country towns, then head outside once the sun disappears.
