TOO MANY STEPS? THE NEW AUSSIE SERUM THAT WANTS TO SHRINK YOUR SKINCARE ROUTINE

If your skincare routine has quietly grown to a cleanser, toner, essence, two serums, an eye cream and a moisturiser, a new Australian serum is asking a simple question: do you really need all of that?

ONOURE, a brand-new skincare label founded by Australian clinical skin therapist Paula Cliffin, has launched its first and only product, Complete Serum.

The launch was reported by Beauty Directory on November 5, and the serum is available now in Australia and New Zealand.

Rather than adding yet another step, the brand says it is designed to replace a multi-step routine.

Meet the founder behind the serum

Paula Cliffin has spent more than three decades working with skin as a clinical skin therapist.

Her philosophy is refreshingly gentle.

"Skin is a living tissue, not a surface that needs endless correction," she told Beauty Directory.

It is a view that will resonate with many women who have found that piling on actives can leave skin red, tight or irritated.

The brand is built around three ideas it calls Protection, Vitality and Clarity.

What is inside the serum

Complete Serum is built on three ingredients made using biotechnology, which means they are produced with the help of processes such as fermentation rather than harvested directly from plants.

The first is naringenin, an antioxidant identical to a molecule found in citrus fruits, which the brand says helps skin stay comfortable when it is dealing with everyday environmental stress.

The second is a yeast ferment ingredient called BeautiFerm Lift, which is intended to support the look of firmer, smoother skin.

The third is a marine biotech complex called Brighlette, which is aimed at a brighter, more even-looking tone and the appearance of dark spots.

These are backed up by some familiar favourites, including niacinamide for balance, plus squalane, shea butter and jojoba seed oil for hydration and comfort.

The formula is developed and made by Debut Biotech in San Diego.

Kind to your skin's microbiome

One of the more interesting points is that the serum is independently certified microbiome-friendly by KIND TO BIOME.

Your skin's microbiome is the community of tiny organisms living on its surface, and it plays a role in keeping the skin barrier happy.

Harsh or overly complicated routines may upset that balance, which is part of the thinking behind a pared-back approach.

The brand says the serum is suitable for all skin types, including sensitive skin.

How to use it

According to the ONOURE website, you apply one to two pumps to clean skin and let it sink in.

It can be used morning and night, followed by a moisturiser if your skin needs a little extra.

In the morning, you will still need sunscreen, which is non-negotiable under the Australian sun.

The brand also suggests adjusting how often you use it depending on how your skin responds.

Price and where to buy the serum

Complete Serum costs $250 for 30 ml and is sold through the ONOURE online store.

That is a serious investment, so it is worth weighing up against what you currently spend.

If it genuinely replaces two or three products on your shelf, the maths may look a little kinder.

As with any skincare, results vary from person to person, and the brand itself does not promise specific outcomes.

Is a simpler routine right for you?

The move towards fewer, better products, sometimes called skinimalism, has been gathering pace for a few years now.

If you are curious, try cutting back slowly rather than ditching everything overnight, so you can see how your skin reacts.

Patch test any new product on a small area first, especially if your skin is sensitive.

If you have a skin condition such as rosacea or eczema, it is a good idea to check with your GP or dermatologist before changing your routine.

And keep the basics in place: a gentle cleanser, a good moisturiser if you need one and daily sunscreen.

Sometimes, less really can be more.
