Melanie Lynskey, one of the most respected actors on television, has signed on to play Erin Patterson in a new Australian drama.

The six-part limited series, Mushroom Murders, is being made for Paramount+ and was among the highlights of the recent Paramount+ and Ten upfronts, where networks preview their coming year of shows.

According to The Australian Women's Weekly, it is due to arrive on the streaming service in 2027.

Lynskey is not only the star but also an executive producer on the project.

Why Melanie Lynskey Is Such A Big Get

If you have watched any of the best television of recent years, you will know her face.

The Kiwi actor won a devoted following as Shauna in the survival thriller Yellowjackets and earned huge praise for her role in The Last of Us.

Early in her career she starred in Peter Jackson's Heavenly Creatures, where she also played a real woman at the centre of a notorious crime.

She has a rare gift for playing ordinary women with complicated inner lives, which is perhaps why producers were so keen to cast her.

Speaking about the series, Lynskey said it "offers a compelling and unique perspective" on a case that made headlines around the world.

What Will The Series Cover?

Rather than focusing on the courtroom, the drama will follow the months between the family lunch in Leongatha, Victoria, in July 2023 and Erin Patterson's arrest that November.

As Rolling Stone Australia reports, three of the four guests at that lunch died, while the fourth survived after weeks in hospital.

Patterson was found guilty in July 2025 of three counts of murder and one count of attempted murder.

It is a deeply sad story for the families and the tight-knit community involved, and many viewers will hope the series treats them with care.

The Creative Team Behind Mushroom Murders

The series was created by Anya Beyersdorf, Daina Reid and Deb Balderstone.

Reid is directing all six episodes, while Beyersdorf leads the writing team alongside Dianne Taylor and Belinda Chayko.

It is being produced by SOAPBOX PICTURES, with Balderstone, Xavier Marchand, Sophia Mogford and Lynskey among the executive producers.

Beverley McGarvey, president of Network 10 and head of streaming at Paramount Australia, described the project as ambitious.

She said Paramount+ was "delighted to partner with such an exceptional creative team".

No premiere date or wider cast has been announced yet, and there is no word on where filming will take place.

Why We Can't Stop Watching True Crime

The Patterson case has already inspired a three-part Stan documentary series.

Australians followed every twist of the trial, and interest has been huge overseas too.

Part of the appeal of true crime is that it lets us explore the darker side of human nature from the safety of our own couch.

For many women in particular, these stories feel personal, because they so often unfold inside ordinary homes and families.

If you do find yourself watching a lot of true crime and feeling anxious or unsettled, it is perfectly fine to switch off and choose something lighter for a while.

How To Watch Melanie Lynskey In The Meantime

While we wait for Mushroom Murders, there is plenty of her work to catch up on.

Yellowjackets is a gripping place to start if you like mystery with a dark edge.

The Last of Us is another standout, even if you are not usually a fan of post-apocalyptic stories.

For something older, Heavenly Creatures remains a haunting and beautifully made film.

Paramount+ is available in Australia as a monthly subscription, and it is worth checking current plans and any free trial offers before you sign up.

A Series To Watch Out For

With a star of Melanie Lynskey's calibre on board and a strong Australian team behind the camera, Mushroom Murders is shaping up to be one of the most talked-about dramas of 2027.

We will keep you posted as soon as a release date is confirmed.
