Jason Donovan is about to step into one of the most famous roles in theatre history, and he is doing it with his late father firmly in his heart.

The former Neighbours star will play rebellious Randle P. McMurphy in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, which opens at Melbourne's Athenaeum Theatre next week.

It is a part forever linked with Jack Nicholson, who made it famous in the much-loved 1975 film.

For Jason, though, the role carries a deeply personal meaning.

Jason Donovan Opens Up About His Dad

In a candid new interview with The Australian Women's Weekly, the star spoke about losing his father, actor Terence Donovan, who died in July aged 90.

He described his dad's death as unexpected, but inevitable.

Terence was a familiar face to generations of Australian viewers, with roles in Neighbours and Home and Away among many others.

He also had a special connection to the very same theatre, having taken a major lead role at the Athenaeum back in 1978.

Now Jason says he is drawing on his father's humour and attitude to bring McMurphy to life.

Rather than copying the famous film, he has studied a stage production from London's Old Vic for inspiration.

He admitted the experience has been a lot to take on, telling the magazine: "It's intense, I'm not going to lie."

What Is One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest About?

The play is a stage adaptation of Ken Kesey's 1962 novel.

It follows McMurphy, a charming troublemaker who fakes mental illness to escape hard labour, only to land in a psychiatric ward ruled by the steely Nurse Ratched.

What starts as a battle of wills becomes a moving story about freedom, dignity and the cost of standing up to authority.

It is funny, heartbreaking and still feels surprisingly relevant today.

A Cast Full Of Familiar Faces

Jason is joined by a strong line-up of Australian talent.

Nadine Garner plays Nurse Ratched, one of the great villains of stage and screen.

Gyton Grantley and George Kapiniaris, both familiar faces to Australian audiences, are also in the ensemble.

The production is directed by Roger Hodgman, a veteran of Australian theatre.

According to BroadwayWorld, demand was strong enough for the season to be extended before it had even opened.

From Neighbours Heartthrob To Leading Man

Many of us first fell for Jason Donovan as Scott Robinson on Neighbours, opposite Kylie Minogue's Charlene.

He went on to enjoy huge pop success in the late 1980s, with hits produced by the Stock Aitken Waterman team.

In 1991 he starred as Joseph in the London production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, a role that cemented his stage credentials.

He has spoken openly over the years about the ups and downs of fame, and he has rebuilt a long, steady career in theatre.

This latest role shows a grittier, more grown-up side of an actor many of us still picture with a mullet and a smile.

How To See Jason Donovan On Stage

The Melbourne season runs from 13 November to 20 December 2026 at the Athenaeum Theatre in Melbourne.

Tickets are available through the Athenaeum Theatre website, so it is worth checking dates early if you have your heart set on a weekend show.

Because the story deals with mental health and some confronting themes, it is best suited to adults and older teens.

If you are planning a night out with friends, booking a pre-theatre dinner in the city makes it a lovely occasion.

It could also make a thoughtful early Christmas gift for a mum or friend who grew up with Scott and Charlene.

A Fitting Tribute

There is something very touching about a son treading the same boards his father once did, just months after saying goodbye.

For Jason, this role seems to be about more than a great part.

It is a way of keeping his dad's spirit alive on stage, and that is something audiences are sure to feel.
