Australians may argue about coffee, footy and property prices, but when it comes to cat names, the nation has made one thing clear. Luna still reigns supreme.

New 2025 data shows Luna remains Australia’s most popular female cat name, appearing in nearly every state’s top three.

“Luna continues its reign as Australia’s favourite female cat name, appearing in nearly every state’s top three,” Nadia Crighton from Pet Insurance Australia says.

On the boys’ side, Leo and Milo continue their stranglehold on the top spots, joined by rising stars like Bear and Mochi.

“Leo and Milo remain the nation’s favourite male cat names, while names like Bear and Mochi reflect a growing trend toward human-style and food-inspired names.”

From Baby Books To Biscuit Aisles

Human baby names are now firmly entrenched in the nation’s litter trays. Lucy, Annie, Archie and Max continue blurring the line between nursery and pet bed.

“More than ever, pets are being treated as true family members, and their names absolutely reflect that. We’re seeing classic human names like Lucy, Annie, Archie and Max dominate the lists again this year,” says Crighton.

At the same time, Australia’s love affair with food has spilt directly into pet naming. Mochi, Miso, Muffin, Oreo and Honey all feature strongly.

“We’re also seeing a huge surge in quirky, joyful names like Mochi, Miso, Muffin and Oreo. Pet parents are having fun with naming, and the food-theme trend has absolutely taken off,” Crighton says.

“Australians love to personalise their pets’ stories, whether it’s through magical names like Merlin and Onyx, pop-culture favourites like Bluey and Simba, or sweet food-inspired names.”

Magic, Myth And The Bluey Effect

Fantasy and mythology continue to shape male cat names, with Merlin, Loki, Zeus and Onyx all reflecting the influence of gaming culture and pop mythology.

And yes, Bluey is still going strong across multiple states, driven by Australia’s most globally adored cartoon export.

How The States Name Their Cats

New South Wales keeps things soft and sentimental with Luna and Leo on top, alongside classics like Prince and Angel.

Victoria stands out for cultural flair, with Yuki cracking the top female list and reflecting strong kawaii influence.

Queenslanders lean boldly into myth, with Freya, Loki and Merlin rising alongside familiar favourites like Lucy and Billy.

South Australians continue their love of personality-driven names, with Bubbles, Flash and Sparky sitting proudly among traditional picks like Bella and Simba.

Western Australia delivers peak quirk, blending earthy and nostalgic choices like Boots, Lady and George with playful food hits like Miso and Muffin.

The Bigger Picture

Across the country, one trend is unmistakable. Australians are naming their cats like children, characters, desserts and heroes, not animals.

And at the centre of it all, soft, celestial and quietly powerful, Luna still rules the nation.
