Australia is in the middle of a scorching summer, and while humans can reach for air conditioning and iced coffees, our pets are far more vulnerable when temperatures spike.

With extreme heat becoming more frequent, pet owners are being urged to think ahead and kit out their animals with products designed to keep them cool, hydrated and safe.

Dr Teagan Lever, Head Vet at Pet Circle, said preparation and awareness can make all the difference.

“Supervision and awareness are crucial. Walk dogs early or late when surfaces are cooler, provide multiple water bowls, and watch for signs of heat stress.

"Frozen treats, cooling mats and shaded areas complement these strategies to prevent heat-related illnesses.

"Certain pets, including flat-faced breeds, older or overweight animals, and those with thick or dark coats, are more vulnerable. Avoid leaving pets in cars or confined spaces, even briefly, as temperatures can rise dangerously fast.”

Why summer safety for pets matters

Unlike humans, most pets cannot sweat efficiently. Dogs and cats rely on panting, airflow and access to water to regulate their body temperature, which makes them far more susceptible to overheating.

Heavy panting, excessive drooling, lethargy, vomiting, pale or bright red gums and a rapid heart rate are all warning signs. If any of these appear, pets should be moved to a cool area immediately, offered water and checked by a vet.

Hot pavements are another hidden danger. Even short walks on concrete or bitumen can burn paw pads, while a few minutes in the midday sun can be risky for brachycephalic breeds, older pets and animals with thick or dark coats.

The cooling essentials worth investing in

With that in mind, here are 10 practical, vet-approved products to help Aussie pets survive summer in comfort.

Canada Pooch cooling vest

Lightweight cooling vests help lower a dog’s body temperature and make outdoor walks safer during cooler parts of the day. They are particularly useful for breeds prone to overheating.

The Canada cooling vest activates an evaporative cooling effect, making walks enjoyable even in the heat.

Pawise cooling bandana

For pets that dislike bulkier gear, cooling bandanas offer a simple solution. Soaked in water before use, they provide quick relief without restricting movement.

PETKIT Eversweet Max smart pet drinking fountain

Encouraging pets to drink more is critical in hot weather. Flowing water fountains can entice animals that turn their noses up at still bowls, helping reduce dehydration.

Pet cooling bed Zen Garden Grey

Cooling beds provide a naturally cool surface without electricity, allowing pets to rest comfortably during hot days. They are especially popular with cats seeking quiet, shaded spots.

Pawise dog protection shoes

Summer pavements can reach skin-burning temperatures. Protective dog shoes shield sensitive paw pads from burns and make walks far safer.

Chill Out freezable cooler, pet food, and water bowl

Freezable bowls keep food fresh and water cool, encouraging pets to eat and drink even during peak heat.

Cooling mats

Cooling mats offer dogs a chilled place to lie down and independently regulate their body temperature, ideal for the hottest hours of the day.

Paws For Life travel water bottle

Portable water bottles with built-in bowls make hydration easy on walks, hikes and beach trips, reducing the risk of heat exhaustion.

Freezable strawberry cooling summer dog toy

Freezable toys combine play with cooling relief, offering mental stimulation while helping dogs beat the heat.

Shade tents and outdoor shelters

Providing shaded outdoor spaces is one of the simplest and most effective heat protection strategies. Shade tents allow pets to escape direct sun and lower their risk of heatstroke.

A little planning goes a long way

With the right products and sensible routines, summer does not have to be dangerous for pets. Early or late walks, constant access to fresh water, shaded spaces and cooling gear can significantly reduce the risks of heat-related illness.

Done right, it means pets can still enjoy the sunshine, just without the emergency vet visit. And that is a summer win everyone can get behind. 🐾
