GIVE THE GIFT OF PROTECTION WITH THIS STUNNING JEWELLERY

Charmaine Schembri,

Halfeti jewellery, crafted by Gold Coast's Charmaine Schembri, is a stunning collection of evil eye pieces designed and handmade in Turkey. These beautiful accessories, steeped in tradition, are believed to ward off negative energy, offering both protection and elegance. Here, Charmaine talks to Lifestyle News about her journey,

Q: Why did you start your company?

A: I started Halfeti as I always gift friends and family evil eye jewellery – it’s something that has meaning, is sentimental and a gift with purpose. I was getting frustrated as everything I liked was super bulky & busy. I love minimal & dainty. All the dainty stuff I found was cheaply made in China, which isn’t my vibe. I LOVE the whole traditional aspect of the Evil Eye. I literally went on a mission for a really long time to source a jewellery maker in Turkey. As I was about to give up, one contacted me! So that’s how it all started.

Q: Can you tell me a little more about it?

A: I get asked quite a bit what ‘Halfeti’ means. Halfeti is a region in Turkey that is home to the only place in the world where black roses grow. I LOVE roses, and my grandmother, Sylvia, who the ‘Sylvia’ collection is named after, also loved roses—she played an instrumental part in my upbringing.

Black roses are extremely rare and precious. My pieces are made in Turkey, and by chance, I came across my manufacturer. My brand was destined to be called ‘Halfeti’.

Q: How long did it take you to source a jewellery maker in Turkey? Did you have to travel there?

A: It took me quite a few months. I searched high and low, sourcing samples to see the quality, but nothing was up to my standards. I was happy to take the time, as I wanted to make sure that what I put forward was high-quality, beautiful, and long-lasting.

Q: Tell me about your range.

A: Each of my collections is quite special and named after female family members. I will always name my collections after important and influential female figures in my life.

The ‘Sylvia’ range is my signature collection (and the most popular collection). This collection is named after my grandmother, Sylvia, who has passed. It features mother of pearl as part of the eye. Mother of pearl reminds me of her as she had some jewellery and items that had either pearl or mother of pearl—it’s classic.

The Cari collection is named after my other grandmother and features hand-painted evil eyes. She has the types of evil eyes found in this collection in her home, hence why I brought this collection to life and named it after her.

The Aly collection is named after my niece – my favourite, little human.

I can’t say too much just yet about the designs, but the upcoming collection is named ‘Carmen’ and it’s named after my mother.

Q: Does the Evil Eye really ward off evil?

A: The evil eye dates back to about 5,000 years. In many cultures, it’s often believed that the evil eye protects by warding off negative energy by deflecting or absorbing the negative energy or intentions from the giver.

Sometimes someone may not be intending to directly send negative energy your way. It could be a strange look given, someone touching you when speaking to you (with not completely positive intent), someone ‘jealous’ of something you have.

It could be as simple as them saying, for example, “She’s always on holiday. She always lives the highlife, while we’re here slaving away.” Without realising, that’s a form of ‘evil eye’ toward you.

Q: What is your mission with Halfeti?

A: My goal is to get as many women as possible to wear a piece from Halfeti. My mission is to bring women closer together so that as females, we continue to empower and strengthen one another, enabling us to be the best we can be as a collective.

There is a myth that in order for the evil eye’s power to work, it must be gifted and not bought for yourself. While I personally don’t believe this (as I wear my own pieces and feel protected), I did start Halfeti for the purpose of gifting.

Giving such a gift sends across a powerful message to whoever the piece is being given to. It lets the recipient know that they are loved, cared for and that the giver wants to protect them and has their best interests at heart.
