Dreaming of a beach break without the crowds?

From car-free river hideaways to relaxed surf towns, these lesser-known coastal destinations offer natural beauty, fresh sea air and space to truly switch off.

ROLLiN analysed hundreds of regional towns and coastal destinations using a hidden-gem scoring system to reveal the Australian beach spots still flying under the radar. Here they are:

Dangar Island, NSW

Just over 50 minutes from Sydney, Dangar Island is a tranquil, car-free oasis set in the Hawkesbury River. Visitors can explore scenic walking trails and kayak along calm waterways, while Bradley’s Beach near the ferry wharf offers shallow waters perfect for swimming, paddleboarding and laid-back picnics.

Killcare Beach, NSW

About an hour from Sydney, Killcare offers a peaceful coastal escape with bushland and ocean views. With minimal social media exposure and fewer visitors, it is ideal for bushwalking, whale watching and unwinding on quiet stretches such as Killcare Beach and nearby Putty Beach.

Manyana, NSW

Roughly two hours south of Sydney, Manyana is known for its pristine shoreline and authentic seaside charm. Manyana Beach and nearby Bendalong Beach are highlights, with Bendalong famous for friendly stingrays that often swim close to shore.

Woonona, NSW

Less than 90 minutes from Sydney, Woonona combines a small-town feel with consistent surf and easy access to Wollongong.

Woonona Beach features reliable breaks, a 50-metre rock pool, a surf club and an elevated rock platform with panoramic coastal views.
